Africa’s protected areas make up approximately 14% of Africa’s land mass. However, wildlife tourism contributes <7% of Africa’s GDP.
On average, the top 10 global zoos generate 4,000x more return per acre than Africa’s protected areas. High-value farming generates 60x-1,000x & large global cities generate >90,000x.
The 70% wildlife population decline over the last 50 years, Africa’s 300% forecasted population growth to 4.2bn by 2100, climate change’s adverse effects on arable lands and rapid urbanisation are all increasing pressure on these protected areas.
